ADELAIDE TO NORTHERN FLINDERS VIA ALLIGATOR GORGE

Depart Adelaide at 7.00 am. Travel to the northern Flinders Ranges, but not before walking the most stunning of all the gorges in the Flinders Ranges, Alligator Gorge. It’s a leisurely meander along the creek through millions of years of history; it’s mostly flat, with just one step of stairs.

FITNESS GUIDE

It’s well worth investing some time and effort preparing for your walking holiday. The graph shows the average daily distance, elevation and terrain difficulty for your hike. The dotted line indicates the average across all our walks, which will give you a feel for how challenging your walk is compared to all – and the recommended type, and amount, of preparation needed.  Of course, you can adapt this according to your existing fitness levels and lifestyle.

The graph and the information below can be used in conjunction with the fitness guide to help you prepare for your walking adventure. Across all walks, average daily distance is 16.8km, average daily elevation is 448m, average terrain difficulty is 5/10.

ngraph

DISTANCE - ABOVE AVERAGE

Distance training is a major consideration in your overall training program. As you progress, incorporate longer walks into your training plan.

Schedule one or two long walks each week, gradually increasing the distance until you can comfortably cover 17-25 km in a single day. Also include walks on consecutive days to help your body adapt to the demands of walking for multiple days in a row. Take every opportunity you can to walk. If you have a fitness watch or phone, you should try to reach >15,000 steps every day.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average distance per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

ELEVATION - ~AVERAGE

Elevation training should be a consideration in your overall training program.

Try to include some form of elevation in more than 40% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up and down stairs at work, at a local oval with a grandstand or up and down small hills is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems, opposed to distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking.

Ensure you can comfortably walk the average elevation per day displayed in the graph, at least one month before you undertake your hike.

TERRAIN

ROCKY TERRAIN

Whilst preparing for walking on rocky terrain, you must focus on the development of balance, strength, and agility.

Integrate targeted strength exercises, such as lunges, squats, and step-ups, to strengthen your leg muscles, with a particular emphasis on improving stability on uneven surfaces. Balancing exercises are essential. Undertake core strength activity, coupled with exercises such as planks and Russian twists to enhance balance. As you progress, include hikes on progressively rougher terrain if you can. Additionally, the appropriate footwear with good ankle support and tread for grip are essential. Stay mindful, watch your step, and use trekking poles for added stability.

MOUNTAINOUS / UNDULATING TERRAIN

As terrain associated with mountain climbs is often somewhat uneven and rocky, balancing and core exercises are vital.

Try to also include some form of elevation in more than 50% of your walking and prioritise resistance training, whilst incorporating stairs anytime you can. Walking up mountains or hills, up and down stairs at work, or up and down at a local oval with a grandstand is incredibly useful. Elevation is often where walkers encounter problems not distance, as it uses an entirely different set of muscles to everyday flat walking. Concentrate on doing lots of squats and lunges to build your glute muscles.

GENERAL INFO

Some tracks are rough and rocky and on those hikes, we’ll cover shorter distances. Full-day walks average 13-18 km. There are great opportunities for fit walkers to challenge themselves as there are rugged peaks to climb and remote gorges to explore.  This trip operates with two experienced, knowledgeable and fun-loving guides so we can offer easier and more challenging walk options along the way.

You’ll enjoy dining at the Woolshed Restaurant – they also have an exclusive range of boutique wines to try. Alcohol or drinks with meals are not included (except tea/coffee and juice with breakfast).

Pre and post-tour accommodation: There are many hotels in Adelaide. We pick up from and drop off at the Terrace Hotel, 208 South Terrace, Adelaide.  The tour starts at 7.00 am at the Terrace Hotel. We arrive in Adelaide by around 5.00 pm on the last day.

I really loved this trip, I knew nothing about the flinders ranges prior to this trip and was blown away with the incredible views. The scenery was amazing As with my previous walks with Auswalk the guides are awesome- they go out of their way to make sure everyone is happy. The option for “shorter” walks is also a great opportunity for more people to have access to the incredible Australian outdoors

Thank you Auswalk for another wonderful experience. The scenery and walks were magnificent and the food and accomodation was also of a very high standard. Everything has been thought of and planned so you simply have to turn up and enjoy yourself! A thoroughly professional and well run tour and we are already looking forward to our next Auswalk adventure.

This is my second walk with Auswalk (Flinders Ranges, 5 day, group guided) and I loved it. The guides were experienced and interesting and the food at Rawnsley Park Station was exceptional. However, the best thing about the trip was the magnificent walks we did. Every one of them was different and spectacular. They were a little more challenging than I would venture on my own, but with the group and guides I accomplished them all and felt a real sense of achievement at the end. Thanks Auswalk. I will be back!

A fantastic experience for seven friends over five days of walking. Each day was amazing and over differing terrain with brilliant views as the reward. The walks were challenging but achievable with the encouragement and assistance of our professional guides Katie and Bec who were able to offer alternatives and changes to suit our group. Nothing was too much trouble. The Woolshed restaurant provided great meals. The other experiences provided, sunset drinks and nibbles and helicopter flight over the area added that extra enjoyment to our visit. Would definitely walk again with Auswalk.

My 3rd guided walk with Auswalk and not the last. Ably led by experienced guides/drivers/cooks Katie and Bill. The walks all require a reasonable level of sure footedness and agility, so make sure you actually enjoy being in a rugged remote location before you commit to this walk. The trip itinerary gives an accurate description of daily walking options and both easier and harder were available each day. The trails are rocky so good soled boots essential. The views are spectacular. We saw many emus, kangaroos, birds, goats and a couple of shinglebacked(?) lizards. No flies on us. Beautiful wildflowers, majestic gums and dry dry creek beds. The Auswalk team consistently maintains a high standard on all their walks and I am always delighted with their choices of accommodation and the abundance and quantity of food available. I’ll be back.

Our sixth walk with Auswalk was to the Flinders Ranges, 200 km NW from Adelaide. The walks were spectacular, the guides wonderful and everything was organised extremely well. We can also recommend walks to Snowy Mountains, Kangaroo Island, Timeless North (Kakadu, Litchfield, Catherine in NT), Canarvon Gorge and Gold Coast Hinterland. Most days there is an easier option and the group dynamics are generally very good.

We decided to go to the Flinders Ranges on an organised tour and were very pleased with the outcome. Having trained and enthusiastic guides made this more challenging and more fun than what we would have attempted on our own. The fully catered concept and cabin accommodation was perfect as was the modest size of the group. We saw the area from a number of vantage points and and the terrain was as spectacular as the post cards show. The food was great the company and guides great and we were able to see the Ranges in better depth and some places that I would not have expected to have visited. Thoroughly recommend Auswalks and we are now looking at other places to do this style of active holiday.

“Just like the three previous reviewers of Colin, Andrew, and Denise, who were amongst my fellow wonderful tour walkers, I also had a great time for all the reasons they have given, including praise of Katie and Bill. Some additional highlights for me included learning about ‘Goyders Line’ and watching the green vegetation change to an arid landscape as we progressed north through Goyders Line; the stay in Melrose, including my accommodation in a truck; the history of Quorn and Hawker, lunch at the summit of St. Marys Peak with one of those views of a life time, Rawnsley Park accommodation, and especially its Woolshed Restaurant with its great meals, friendly staff and comfortable sofas, which were great for a chat or read whilst sipping a quiet Bundy Rum and coke.
This was my third AUSWALK trek and I am looking forward to my fourth in a few months’ time”

Have always wanted to visit the Flinders Ranges and to get up close and chose a walking holiday with Auswalks. The organisation communication and attention to detail could not be faulted. The accommodation meals , the other hikers and the guides Katie and Bill could not have been better. Newbies and old hands were made welcome and everyone’s needs and abilities catered for. I would recommend not only the Flinders Ranges as a destination but will be seriously considering doing more Auswalks holidays. The highlights were the scenery and the ability to to see the ranges from the air( an optional extra).
