George Town RSL War Memorial

Photographs supplied by Kay Pamment

The RSL War Memorial commemorates those the district who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved.  In a tube buried in the memorial are the names of all those who enlisted from the municipality who enlisted in World War One as well as the names of all past and present members of the R.S.S.I.L.A.

The recently erected and handsome soldiers' memorial at George Town was opened yesterday by the Minister for Lands and Works (Major T. H. Davies), who is president of the George Town sub-branch of the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia. The memorial is of white gravel and concrete, and at night is lighted internally with a red light which shows through three crosses, facing, north, south, and east. Buried in the monument, preserved in a copper tube, are the names of all returned soldiers from the municipality who enlisted for service in the Great War and of all past and present members of the George Town sub-branch of the R.S.S.I.L.A.

Also in the tube are copies of the newspapers issued yesterday, this week's Government Gazette, containing all the Ministers of the Crown, together with the notice of the appointment of Sir Ernest Clark as Governor of the state, and samples of coins and stamps in use at the present time. It also contains details of the landing of Captain Paterson at George Town in 1804, when he proclaimed the territory a protectorate of the British Empire.
