Louise Bourgeois and Vasily Kandinsky major exhibitions coming to the Art Gallery
Exhibitions of works by two of the world’s greatest artists – Louise Bourgeois and Vasily Kandinsky – are coming to the Art Gallery for the Sydney International Art Series.
Louise Bourgeois
One of the most extensive exhibitions dedicated to a woman artist ever presented in Australia, Louise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day? will be the first monographic exhibition to be presented in the Art Gallery’s new building.
Bourgeois – who was born in Paris in 1911 and died in New York in 2010 – was one of the most influential artists of the past century. Spanning seven decades and featuring more than 150 works, this unprecedented presentation of her work – the largest survey of Bourgeois ever presented in Australia – will be installed in two gallery spaces, including the Tank, from 25 November 2023 to 28 April 2024.

Kandinsky
Kandinsky, an exhibition from the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, will showcase the life and work of Vasily Kandinsky in our original South Building from 4 November 2023 to 10 March 2024.
First presented as Vasily Kandinsky: Around the Circle at the Guggenheim Museum New York in 2021–22, this comprehensive exhibition draws from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s rich holdings to reveal indepth the work of one of the most experimental, influential and best-loved European modernists. Kandinsky was born in Moscow in 1866 and died in Paris in 1944. He was a pioneer of abstract art and an eminent theorist, who broke new ground in painting during the first decades of the 20th century.

Louise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day? and Kandinsky are presented as part of the Sydney International Art Series.
The Sydney International Art Series was created in 2010 by the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and Art Gallery of New South Wales, to bring the world’s most outstanding artists to Sydney.
