Jewels of the Kimberley – 2025

Upon arrival in Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory and a former frontier outpost, your private transfer will take you to the Adina Darwin. The balance of the day is at leisure to relax in your hotel overlooking the Darwin Waterfront Precinct or perhaps explore tropical Darwin and its fascinating history. From ancient Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and the pioneering spirit of the early settlers, to survival stories of WWII, the bombing of Darwin and Cyclone Tracy, Darwin’s history and heritage is vast, diverse and captivating in every way. This evening, join our Journey Director and fellow travellers at a welcome dinner.

Following breakfast, we visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service to enjoy heroic tales and history of the RFDS. Board our flight to the heart of the Kimberley. Below us passes a land of breathtaking contrasts covering billions of years in history. Comprising in total over one million square kilometres, Australia’s North West is one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth.

Arriving in Kununurra, we tour the Pumphouse, once an integral part of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme before visiting the Diversion Dam, which today harnesses the massive volume of water that flows down the Ord River for use in farming. After viewing the Ivanhoe Crossing, a flowing causeway built over the mighty Ord River, we learn about a local success at the Sandalwood Factory, the world’s largest distiller of sandalwood oil, an important ingredient in perfumery since Egyptian times.

This morning we visit the Waringarri Art Gallery, a living, growing art centre celebrating the uniqueness of Miriwoong cultural identity before being transferred to Kununurra Airport for our scenic flight to El Questro. From the horizon emerges an ancient land of sweeping vistas and rugged natural wonders, a frontier of deep gorges and majestic mountains. Landing at El Questro Station in the heart of the Kimberley, we transfer via 4WD to our accommodation. This afternoon we tour the Station.

El Questro Wilderness Park extends for approximately 80 km north-south and 60 km east-west, totalling one million acres in size. Its landscape offers outstanding diversity – from rugged sandstone ranges and broad tidal flats to rainforest pockets, gorges and permanent waterfalls. Today we explore the remarkable bush culture and history that surrounds us. We begin with a visit to Zebedee Springs, a serene oasis of thermal pools and waterfalls set in the prehistoric forest of Livistona and Pandanus palms. Unwind in the inviting surrounds and for those interested, an opportunity to enjoy a soothing soak. This afternoon, we embark on a cruise through the Chamberlain Gorge. During the cruise, we will discover the diverse flora and fauna, resident rock wallabies, Johnston crocodiles and the always cheeky Archer fish, which are all familiar inhabitants of the gorge. Relax on the peaceful return journey at dusk when the colours of the Kimberley shine on the towering cliffs.

We begin today by exploring the remarkable bush culture and history that surrounds us. Learn about the pioneering heritage and characters that ran El Questro when it was a working station. Discover the Indigenous people’s use of different bush plants, including uses for medicine and remedies, weapons and even fish poison. Leaving the remarkable El Questro behind, we re-board our private aircraft for the flight to Faraway Bay. Gaze below as we cross over the mighty Ord River, mangroves and expansive rugged coastline. Look out for dugongs, sea turtles, sharks and massive saltwater crocodiles. Most importantly, eyes peeled for aerial views of the iconic King George Falls. Upon arrival we explore an extraordinary and diverse range of Indigenous rock art including some of the most unique examples of Bradshaw rock art. Transfer to our accommodation, Faraway Bay, one of the world’s most isolated wilderness retreats, nestled on a rocky hilltop overlooking the shimmering turquoise waters of the Timor Sea.

Spend the day taking in this extraordinary environment. Cruise by boat along the sweeping Kimberley Coastline to King George River spotting turtles, manta rays, flying fish and an array of sea birds. Admire the ancient rock-lined gorges and towering cliffs before arriving at the Kimberley’s stunning natural wonder, the breathtaking twin King George Falls. Soak in the splendour of nature’s cathedral in this pristine environment, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Bidding adieu to the Kimberley after breakfast, we take a private aircraft flight to Darwin. This afternoon enjoy a tour of the Darwin Military Museum and discover the city’s historical and turbulent past. Learn about the first and largest foreign attack ever mounted on Australia when more than 188 Japanese aircraft attacked Darwin’s harbour and airfield. Savour a farewell dinner at one of Darwin’s finest restaurants this evening.
