Strahan was a quaint little town with not an awful lot to see and do, but what there is, is worth the visit. We had only the one full day in Strahan - for the river cruise (stayed in town for 2 nights): if we had the time again, we’d allow a second day for local sight-seeing and the train ride. We were exceptionally fortunate with the weather, making the day cruise truly memorable, including some absolutely beautiful scenery and a fascinating tour of the convict settlement on Sarah Island.
Unfortunately, the seafood buffet at ‘View 42 Degrees’ was fully booked out, so we’d advise phoning ahead for that!
We weren’t entirely sure if we’d visit Strahan as part of our Tasmania trip as it was a little ‘out of our way’: we are now glad that we made the effort!

We loved everything we did in Strahan - from staying in the King Suite in the Wilderness Lodge, to the World Heritage Cruise on the Gordon River, The Ship That Never Was play, Hogarth Falls and sunsets over the water on Beach Rd.
The locals were fanatastic too - do yourself a favour and go there !

Strahan was a beautiful little town that had much more to offer than we were expecting. We didn't allow enough time this trip to make the most of what Strahan has to offer so we plan to return in the future to explore further!

A breath taking area but it must be remembered that this is a wilderness area and prepare accordingly. At present there is only one provision store in the town which turned out to be the best IGA I've been in. Great steaks from the meat department !! At the moment petrol can only be purchased at the airport.
We had an excellent trip on the Gordon River Cruise,- plenty of information provided by tour guides and a tasty buffet lunch. The views have to be experienced, from the fish farms to the ruins of the convict's dwellings on Sarah Island and dispite the changeable weather it was a trip to remember.
After disembarking a visit to the Huon Pine saw mill with free demonstration is recommended.
Sadly, our hoped for trip on the Strahan/ Queenstown Wilderness Railway was fully booked. We should have booked in advance for this attraction as we had done for the river cruise. It should be noted that at the time of our visit (March 2024) part of the tracks were closed for repair and 2 trips were on offer, one originating in Strahan, the other shorter one is from Queenstown.
Although we self catered there were plenty of eateries available in the town.
We self catered, large kitchen area, microwave, toaster, electric kettle, two hot plate electric cooktop. Saucepans, electric frypan, stovetop frypan, kitchen ware. Supplied sauces, cooking oil, butter, jams and honey.
Beautiful large cabin, large comfy bed, modern, clean all round.
Large comfy lounge, tv etc
Hosts were very helpful. We walked short distance to Strahan village, jetty area to catch the cruise boats.
A wonderful example of the beautiful heritage and history that is rich in Strahan and Tasmania!! The home is warm and welcoming and Thomas was excellent!! The manor is furnished with period decor, beautiful ornaments and paintings. Take the history tour and check out the view from the widows walk!! Very generous continental breakfast! lovely bathrooms, linens and toiletries.
We had an amazing experience. Everything from checkin to facilities was great. Staff was super helpful. Our villa was very clean and spacious and well appointed for a family of 4 . Location was superb. This is an under rated motel and photos dont do justice to how good it is .We would definitely love to stay again for our next trip to Strahan.
The location was excellent - right on the water. The Reception staff were extremely friendly and very helpful and knowledgeable about local attractions, amenities and places to eat. The hotel upgraded us to a King Studio for our anniversary. 100%, wholeheartedly, recommend this hotel - a wonderful boutique hotel. You will not be disappointed.
Castaway Holiday Apartment was probably our best stay of our 10 day excursion around Tassie. The room was spacious, very clean, neat, and tidy. Bed was very comfy. Paul and Sharon were very helpful, and gave us some great tips for places to visit,
Very close to all you need, and a short walk to the town centre. Private and quiet.
This was a dreamy and dreamlike place at the same time. Nestlled in the beautiful setting of Tasmanian wilderness, there is a beautiful garden, a big room with kitchen and everything. Also the WIFI and the shower were good. Excellent accomodation 5 Mins driving from Ocean Beach and Strahan town center. Could not be much better....
I don’t give enthusiastic reviews unless the service was exceptional. The staff at Franklin Manor were friendly and very helpful. Lincoln in particular did every possible to make our stay comfortable. We really enjoyed our short two day stay in Strahan. Premium deck on Gordon River Cruises was tourism done right - very impressive.
We enjoyed our short stay in Strahan made better by being able to stay at Aloft in the garden studio. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and spacious.Annie was very friendly and the little touches ie chocolates and biscuits were a lovely treat.
Ken and Jo are Fantastic Hosts
The best stay we have had in Tasmania.
A fantastic spot, Old World Charm with all the modern facilities you need.
Would not hesitate to stay here again, and thoroughly recommend it to anyone staying in Strahan.
The location was amazing! Right on the waterfront across from the Hoggarth Falls trailhead, which was my main reason for coming to Strahan! The room was quite spacious and large with lots of natural lighting!
- Nice view outside the family studio window
- Within easy reach to the great Hogarth Falls (1.4 km) walk
- The continental brekky had a good selection of cereals but don't feel enough milk was provided
Beautiful little town on the waterfront. Room with the best view on the hilltop. Best seafood buffet we had in a long time. We had 2 fantastic days in Strahan an we would stay at "The Village" again
Wonderful location, great for family. The two toilets was a definite bonus with six adults and two children! The kids and grandparents alike loved the table tennis table!
