ABOUT

Luxury Accommodation servicing Chiltern, Rutherglen & Beechworth

"Whatever might take you here, you'll find it hard to leave."

Mortimer's Lodge is an historic two-bedroomed cottage within a short stroll of Chiltern, a former gold-mining village that, charmingly, time forgot. Located mid-way between Rutherglen and Beechworth, the area is surrounded by vineyards, steeped in colonial & gold-mining history, and abounds with natural beauty, as well as rare flora & fauna.

SEE & DO

THINGS TO DO

Wineries Tour

Within 20 minutes are the wine regions of Rutherglen and Beechworth. Slightly further is the Glenrowan and King Valley regions. There are a number of Wine Tour operators (click link). Visit our Wineries Page for our personal favourite vineyards cellar doors (after extensive research !)

Cultural Sites

The Chiltern - Mount Pilot National Park offers walks and outstanding bird-watching. The Yeddonba Aboriginal Cultural site contains unique wall art, and is 15 minutes away.

The short walk to the summit of Mt Pilot offers breath-taking 360 degree views of the surrounding area.

Gold Mining Heritage

The surrounding area was an important gold mining region in the mid to late 1800's, drawing in plucky prospectors from Australia and overseas. Visit many of the old workings, notably the Magenta Open Cut, Golden Bar, Alliance and Chiltern Valley.

Cycling & Rail Trails

There are several cycle touring routes around the Chiltern area, as well as Rail Trails in the Rutherglen and Beechworth areas. The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail runs through this region.

Bird Watching

Chiltern is one of the premier bird-watching areas in southern Australia. The district has exceptional bird diversity due to two distinct bioregions – the drier woodlands of the inland and wetter mountain forests.

More than 220 species have been recorded at Chiltern, 180 of them residents or regular visitors.

Highlights are threatened woodland species such as Regent Honeyeater, Swift Parrot, Turquoise Parrot and Square-tailed Kite.

Towns & Villages

Chiltern is a central starting point to visit many surrounding towns and villages. Some you'll have heard of, and others are hidden gems.

Whether it be the iconic Beechworth, or the wine capital of the north-east, Rutherglen, or the antique shops of Yackandandah, or cute little Elderado with its gold mining history and Victoria's smallest pub, McEvoy Tavern.
