Point Hut Crossing is a shady picnic area with good access to sandy beaches. Picnic tables and toilet facilities are available.

You can take an easy and scenic 1-hour walk from Point Hut Crossing to Pine Island South. This is the southernmost section of the Murrumbidgee Discovery Track.

Dogs are welcome on-leash and off-leash in designated areas – see the map. Dogs must not be taken northward beyond the turnoff to the off-leash exercise area on the Murrumbidgee Discovery Track.

Murrumbidgee Discovery Track

Distance: 27 km one-way
Time suggested: 12 hours
Difficulty: Hard

The 27-kilometre Murrumbidgee Discovery Track makes it possible to walk the length of the river between Point Hut Crossing in the south and Casuarina Sands in the north, passing through Pine Island and Kambah Pool.

Whether you explore just a small section of the track or walk its entire length, you'll discover a variety of animals and large areas of natural riverine and gorge vegetation. You could even spot one of several rare plant species.

Sections of the track are suitable for mountain bikes. The section between Kambah Pool and the historic dry-stone wall at Tuggeranong forms part of the Centenary Trail.

Murrumbidgee Discovery Track Section: Point Hut Crossing to Pine Island

Distance: 2.4 km between carparks; 3.3 km to middle of Pine Island
Time suggested: 1 hour (on foot)
Difficulty: Easy (also suitable for mountain bikes)

This walk starts at the southern car park at Pine Island and passes through the Pine Island Reserve before reaching open grasslands, providing great river views. Park Carers of the Southern Murrumbidgee carry out revegetation, weed management, erosion control and walking track maintenance along this stretch of river.

The waterways on Ngunnawal Country have sustained all life including their people, the plants and animals. The Murrumbidgee is part of Ngunnawal songlines, and pathways throughout Ngunnawal Country.

Songlines are the memory code that gives Ngunnawal people information from the landscape to tell the stories of vital knowledges, cultural values and wisdom.

Point Hut Crossing is located off Point Hut Road, 25 minutes' drive south of Canberra's city centre.

Parking is available.
