The Heritage Reading Room

“Reading is dreaming with eyes wide open”

The upstairs ‘Heritage Reading Room’ of Groom’s Cottage is a collective effort supported by book donations from hundreds of people saddened by the loss of Binna Burra and the old lodge library. There is a plethora of historical items on Binna Burra, Lamington National Park, and the pioneering characters behind their establishment.

Read about the history of Arthur Groom teaming up with bushwalking enthusiast Romeo Lahey, a timber-cutter by trade but also a pioneering environmentalist. Their partnership was equipped with a potent mix of idealism and pragmatism to realise their combined dream. They purchased 34 hectares of land from dairy farmer George Rankin by selling shares in the property and set about establishing a basic holiday camp. They also formed the Queensland National Parks Association to promote the preservation of key environmental areas.

Reading room open daily for guests. See reception staff for more information.

Amazing spot to have a sneaky beer after a day hiking. Local beers are great, service is friendly and a great spot to relax next to the outdoor fire. Just wish you were open later

Beautiful old heritage building with excellent sunset views which you can enjoy on the grass lawn. Amazing tap beers and share boards for daytime grazing. Love this spot!

Be a part of our new story

The Groom’s Cottage was the home of Arthur Groom who established Binna Burra Lodge (along with Romeo Lahey). As one of the last remaining heritage buildings at Binna Burra, we had to find a way to open this to the public, so we’ve done just that. We welcome you to join those who have been enjoying the Grooms Cottage for 85 years and be a part of the new history of Binna Burra. Experience some of the most breathtaking scenery from the cottage terrace and a sundowner or two, before heading to the Binna Burra Tea House for dinner.
