Ceremonies are central to Aboriginal culture, preserving laws, traditions and spiritual connections to the land. They pass down knowledge, mark important life events, ensure the renewal of natural resources and strengthen community ties. Through song, dance and storytelling, ceremonies maintain cultural identity as well as honouring ancestral spirits.

Feature Artist - Angelina Ngale

Angelina's artistic journey began in the late 1970s when batik-making was introduced to Utopia. She quickly embraced the medium, but like many artists in the region, she transitioned to acrylic painting in the late 1980's, when it became the dominant form of artistic expression in Utopia.

Angelina’s most popular style is that of the Atham-areny, the story of mystical small creatures that dwell where there is no fire. It was in 2003, during a bush trip to Utopia that Angelina guided us to the sacred site of the Atham-areny and agreed to translate this Dreaming into her art. Her first two Atham-areny paintings were later acquired for the Mbantua Gallery Permanent Collection. These striking works depict women engaging in sacred ceremonies, singing and dancing with witch doctors to draw out illnesses caused by the Atham-areny beings.

As she moves into the later years of her life, her paintings have become less intricate, a natural evolution as her body and eyesight slow down. Yet, her passion for art remains as strong as ever. She continues to paint with enthusiasm, especially when visited on bush trips to her homeland, keeping her stories and culture alive for generations to come.
