Shiny!

To be good, to be having a good time

Something that is great, neat, very cool, peachy keen

Our Story

Located in the beautiful town of Kingscliff, Northern Rivers in New South Wales our Shiny Brew Café is nestled amongst neighbouring communities such as Cabarita Beach, Cudgen and Fingal Head (just to name a few).

Since starting our quest for a change of lifestyle, Leighton and I wanted to move somewhere that was focused on being a community, for our children, but also so that we could one day open a café.  Enter Shiny Brew!!!

We are so happy with our move from Brisbane, this Region has such a wealth of beautiful produce to use as well as a beautiful, relaxing but community driven way of life.  We are so very excited to be able to use all of the local produce to entice everyone.

Shiny can mean anything you want it to, there are so many options. For us, the name Shiny stems from so many things, it was impossible for us not to use it for our café.

Shiny as in, we have started a brand new Shiny life (moving from Brisbane and for myself especially as I gave up a Corporate Career of approximately 18 years), a brand new Shiny café in a new Shiny and beautiful building, we live next to the amazing beach at Kingscliff with the very Shiny sun and it is also a saying from one of our most favourite TV shows, Shiny meaning cool, neat, peachy keen, good …so everything’s Shiny here in more sense than one!!!

We love the locally produced food, we love all of the locally made products and all of the local business including our competition.  What we love most, is the fact that we have all of this at our fingertips to use, it’s such an amazing area that we would be crazy not to take advantage of it all.

We take sustainability seriously

Our earth is not going to last forever if we keep on using and abusing it the way we currently do.  It is a lot harder within the industry to use sustainable ways to run our business however, where we can we are, and we hope to continually find new ways that we can help our earth to get back on track.

You might also notice that a lot of our menu is grounded in a plant based menu, that’s because we believe in supporting all dietary choices as well as helping to reduce the amount of unnecessary use of animal products to benefit mankind..In saying that, we are not a vegan restaurant as stated above, we believe that it’s your choice!!!!

Some of the things we are doing to help to reduce and reuse are below:

Our Milk System: It’s called the Juggler and it’s the brainchild of Six Simple Machines, just down the road (well maybe a short trip), it uses 10L milk bladders instead of the 2L harder plastic milk containers, so already we’re cutting down on plastic but it also measures our milk exactly for us which means less milk wastage for the beautiful Jersey cows in the area.

Recycling: Yes, I have separate bins for recyclables, green waste and general waste and I’m also trying to set up a system to give all of my green waste to our Local Farmers for them to use (I’m still working on this one)…some of my coffee grinds will go to them, but my Dad, who is an avid gardener has got first dibs on them!! If anyone is interested in collecting some of our green waste, just let me know..I’m sure there will always be enough to share around.

Plastic: So many things these days have unnecessary plastic as packaging or use plastic when it’s not essential to do this, we are continually looking at what we order, buy and use to see how we can be cutting down on how much unnecessary wastage we have.

Takeaway orders: Look at where we live, it’s so beautiful, this means people want to take their coffee or their food and walk down to the beach to eat/drink it.  This means we have to provide vessels to cover those needs, anything we do purchase is as sustainable as possible, with home compostable options or the nearest alternative. and Everything is either made of recycled products, can be recycled or composted (some are only commercially compostable, but others are home compostable, ask us), also, if the bin is full at the beach, bring it back up as we’ll happily dispose of it for you the correct way.  The other side of this is that we want to offer to our regular locals, that you can use our dinnerware and cups, just bring them back on the way back through to home and we’ll wash them up for next time.  If you would like, you can bring your own dinnerware and of course your own cups from home.

Our newest work has been with the Circular Cafes group within the Tweed Council and NE Waste, they are doing amazing work with local food businesses helping to reduce waste where they can and it’s been really fun talking with them to figure out ways we can do more to help in our fight for sustainability.

If you have any ideas to help with our efforts of sustainability, please, we welcome them.
