THERESE McMAHON
CERAMICS
I am currently making works that are my interpretation of Australian bush flowers. The flowers I choose to paint have healing qualities when used as a tincture or in other ways. Indigenous Australians used bush plants and flowers to heal and nourish their bodies for tens of thousands of years. My practice involves making a series of forms – around 5 at a time. The surface is painted with many layers of coloured slips. I draw and carve through the layers of colour revealing images and textures intuitively as I work. This creates a multi layered visual experience, just like looking through the bush and seeing the colours, shapes, and textures in nature.
