Our beaches

""

Just moments away from Sydney’s city centre are Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama beaches. Each year, these beaches welcome millions of local and international visitors to enjoy Australia’s stunning coastal environment.

Waverley Council is responsible for the management of the beaches and lifeguards patrol them all year round. Each day, lifeguards will assess the conditions in the water and set up red and yellow flags to designate space for swimming. If there are no flags, no swimming is recommended.

All three beaches offer amenities such as showers, toilets, BBQ and picnic facilities. Bondi Beach also offers an accessible beach mat and wheelchairs which are available at certain times during the week.

Alcohol and smoking are prohibited at Waverley’s parks and beaches. If you come for a visit, please leave the beach in the same way you found it by taking all rubbish with you.

Bondi Beach

""

The world famous Bondi Beach is roughly one kilometre in length and attracts up to 50,000 beachgoers on a busy summer’s day. The beach is enjoyed by local swimmers, tourists, bodysurfers and board riders of all ages and walks of life.

The southern end of the beach is popular with experienced board riders, while the northern end is more suitable for swimmers and learner surfers. Families also prefer the northern end because of the children’s wading pool and rock pool.

Bronte Beach

""

Bronte Beach boasts incredible coastal views from its clifftops and a beautiful adjoining parkland and gully which are perfect for exploring. For those who prefer a more leisurely swim, take a dip in the ocean pool at the southern end of the beach.

Tamarama Beach

""

For a quieter beach experience, some prefer to head around the corner to Tamarama. While this beach may not be as busy as Bondi, it’s just as beautiful. However, it’s not always safe to swim at because of unpredictable surf conditions and strong currents. For this reason, it’s usually favoured by experienced surfers. If you do plan to visit for a swim, make sure you swim between the flags and check in with our lifeguards about the surf conditions on the day.

Key tips for the beach

  • Practice regular hand hygiene
  • Stay home if you feel unwell
  • If it’s crowded, come back later
  • Swim between the flags
  • Follow directions from Lifeguards, Rangers and Police
